When are the public holidays in Portugal in 2023? (2024)

The end of the year is approaching and now is the perfecttime to work out the best times to take a break in Portugal while taking advantageof the public holidays.

In total, in 2023, there will be 13 mandatory public andreligious holidays and one optional, Carnival, according to Dinheiro Vivo.

Three of these holidays will take place over weekends: January1, Sunday (New Year), April 9, Sunday (Easter) and June 10, Saturday (PortugalDay).

When are the publicholidays each month during 2023 in Portugal?

January

The first week of the year starts on a Sunday, so New Year'sDay is one of the holidays that fall during the weekend.

February

The February holiday may be optional: Carnival Tuesday 21st.You may or may not be given this day, depending on the government,municipalities and companies.

"Carnival Tuesday can be observed as a holiday, whenprovided for in an instrument of collective labour regulation or in anemployment contract (negotiable will of the parties)", according to theAuthority for Working Conditions (ACT).

If the contract or collective agreement so determines,Carnival is a mandatory holiday like any other and must be remuneratedaccordingly.

For Civil Service workers, it depends on a decision by thegovernment or municipalities, in the case of local administration.

April

In April we have the long Easter weekend - Good Friday is onthe 7th and Easter on the 9th.

There will also be the possibility of combining theseholidays with 25 Abril celebrations, which falls on a Tuesday.

May

The following month, there will be another three-dayweekend. Labour Day (May 1) will be a Monday.

June

The holiday of Corpo de Deus will be on the 8th, a Thursday.The 10th of June, Portugal Day, will be on a Saturday.

August

During the height of summer there is also a holiday, the Dayof the Assumption of Our Lady, on August 15th falls on a Tuesday.

October

The day of the Implantation of the Republic, October 5, willbe on a Thursday.

November

November 1st is All Saints' Day and lands on a Wednesday.

December

In the last month of the year, you can count on threeholidays that can turn into three long weekends.

The 1st, Restoration of Independence, and 8th,Day of the Immaculate Conception, are both on a Friday. Christmas Day, on the25th, falls on a Monday.
