The Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre (RNSSC) serves as the Royal Navy’s ‘think tank’. It was established in 2019 to strengthen the conceptual component of fighting power. The RNSSC harnesses the intellectual capital of both internal Royal Navy and external academia and think tank expertise, in order to inform strategy and policy decisions. The centre creates a philosophy of critical thinking within the Naval Service, and is the Royal Navy's hub for academic and intellectual engagement. Given the complexity of today’s global environment, the vital place that the Royal Navy plays in our defence, trade and prosperity, and the kindness of Captain Dr Kevin Rowlands, and so many across the Royal Navy, I was delighted to accept Kevin’s kind invitation to continue as a RNSSC Visiting Fellow.

I wish all our American friends a very Happy Independence Day. Our modern world was made by the Special Relationship and remains as vital today as it always has been, It was a great pleasure indeed for Viktorija Starych-Samuoliene and myself to join the Independence Day celebrations at Winfield House. I am grateful to HE Ambassador Jane Hartley, for her gracious invitation and wonderful speech. I wish to express my appreciation to Mr Matthew Palmer, Deputy Chief of Mission, and to Captain Greg Leland USN, US Defence Attaché, and Mrs Leland, for their constant kindness. Thank you to all of you at US Embassy London for your public service to your country, and to our Special Relationship.

Daniel Dobrowolski, Chloe Barker, Luciana Garstang, Jack Goldsack and I are pleased to announce the appointment of our 329th Fellow of the The Durham Institute of Research, Development, and Invention (DIRDI). Our Fellows and Members are drawn from senior academics in science, engineering and geopolitics, across Durham, Cambridge and Oxford Universities and Imperial College, UCL and Kings College London, at London University. www.DIRDI.org combines 1 private sector aim, in “Edisonian” applied commercialised research, in ultrasound, acoustics and electromagnetism, with 4 public service-led ones. These include finding and supporting the United Kingdom’s “Next Newton”, identifying and nurturing, through the ups and downs of life, over a20-year period, future UK Nobel Prize winners of science, conducting “Newtonian Discovery”, research, in the fundamental physical principles of our Universe, for humankind. The 5th aim is a “social scientific impact” one, to help people across the North East develop an idea, invention or innovation, technically and commercially, to help create greater economic hope for those with less of it than we have ourselves. In the latter we will shortly be launching the “Stephenson Prize” named after George Stephenson, the creator of the railways, and himself born in Wylam, Northumberland, to the west of Newcastle. Over time this may become a national programme. For in our country, the world’s 2nd largest generator of Nobel Prize winners of science after the USA, this academic excellence is matched by the industrial inventiveness and innovation of UK Society. It is our hope that at DIRDI, we can help to combine the potential of both, and to help to gently re-develop a public service-led approach to joint and shared, national endeavour, across UK Science and UK Industry overall. If you are a senior UK academic who wishes to contribute, please do not hesitate to contact us. I warmly thank Professors Paula Chadwick, Douglas Halliday, David Wilkinson, Del Atkinson, Dr Oliver Vogt,Bernard Hornung, Adrian Saw, Angus Hodgkiss, Lewis Kell and Oliver Daisey, and the senior leadership team, past and present, of Durham University.

It was a great pleasure to attend the Oxford AUKUS Dialogue at the Rothermere American Institute, and the splendid dinner at Christ Church College, Oxford University in the evening. I warmly thank Dr Robert Johnson, Director of the Emerging Threats Group, Oxford Changing Character of War Centre, Samuel Murison, Chris Morris and the Emerging Threats team for their fine arrangements, and The Hon Stephen Smith, Australian High Commissioner, Damian Parminter, Director General AUKUS,and Brigadier John Ridge CBE, Director Defence Innovation for speaking so well at this AUKUS Dialogue. I am constantly impressed by the calibre of people in the Royal Navy and the UK Civil Service, and grateful for their dedicated public service, and to those across UK Academe for their brilliance and dedication. AUKUS Pillar 2 offers incredible opportunities for UK Science, who are very strongly positioned to make their strategic contribution to it.I wish the leadership team of the Oxford AUKUS Dialogue all success in this important work.

It was a pleasure for all of us at the Council on Geostrategy to host Nigel (Frankie) Vaughan”, Senior Adviser to AUKUS Pillar 2 at the Ministry of Defence, at our Whitehall Briefing session this week. Frankie is one of our country’s many dedicated public servants and AUKUS is one of the UK’s most important strategic agreements since 1945. Through AUKUS the UK, USA and Australia will shape our modern world for the next 75 years, just as the UK and USA created it 80 years ago when, at home, we created the NHS and our welfare state to extend dignity to our people at their point of indignity, in a compact of gratitude and the certain intent that those who needed our nation’s help at those points would return to it as soon as they could, to contribute to the society that had supported them at their time of need, and equality for women under the law. Whilst overseas, with the USA, we created the United Nations, an equal member Commonwealth, the IMF, the World Bank and NATO itself, all at a time when GDP-to-debt was 250%, when bread itself was rationed and which ensured the greatest period of prosperity humankind has ever known. I hope that AUKUS will ensure that the next 75 years will be as free as the last 80. I wish to thank Frankie Vaughan for his fine speech and for his exceptional work in helping to ensure that it does.

Last week we appointed our 300th senior academic to the The Durham Institute of Research, Development, and Invention (DIRDI), www.dirdi.org , whose aims include finding the United Kingdom’s “Next Newton”, identifying and supporting future UK Nobel Prize winners over 20-year timespans and to help those in the Northeast with an idea, invention or innovation, to find greater economic hope that we have ourselves. Pictured at our termly dinner at Hatfield College, Durham University, are Professor Paula Chadwick, Head of Physics at Durham and our Advisory Council member, Professor Ann MacLarnon, Master of Hatfield College, Professor David Wilkinson, Professor of Theology and our Advisory Council member, Richard Burge, Chair of Council at Hatfield College and Daniel Dobrowolski, Head of the Institute.William Wordsworth described Isaac Newton as a ‘mind forever voyaging through strange seas of thought.’Newton advanced every part of mathematical science that he studied. Scientific progress is though collaborative. Every great scientist only reaches new frontiers of discovery because they build on the work of others, exchange ideas and participate in an international community of discovery. Indeed, Newton said, ‘if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” We hope that our Institute helps others to become scientific “giants” themselves.

“Maritime Britain in the 21st Century” has now been published, after an exceptional and intensive period of work by Admiral Sir Ben Key, KCB CBE, First Sea Lord, Dr Kevin Rowlands and Andy Young, of the Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre, to whom I am most grateful for allowing me to contribute my chapter on British Prosperity and the Royal Navy: A Global Maritime and Underwater Power, launched at the First Sea Lord’s Sea Power Conference, by the Council on Geostrategy, in Parliament. As Admiral Sir Ben Key says so well, this book is a “symphony of perspectives, from the halls of academia to the engine rooms of industry, from the corridors of policy, to the decks of ships ..weaving a tapestry that reveals the intricate relationship between the United Kingdom and the sea … in a ‘whole of nation’ approach … a global understanding of the profound impact the seas have on all our lives.”https://lnkd.in/e4xvVC3e
