The flyer says Noma and it is good brand. I guess in the store you can get either one.

This is not listed online, but it's listed in the flyer (August 26 - September 1) on page 2, top left corner. I went to [rfdlink=/forums/autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=35]Canadian Tires[/rfdlink] and verified the sale.

Also, the Tasco binoculars which are exactly the same, were on sale for $9.99.

No cheap telescopes are any good. Usually the tripods are too shaky to see anything and the optics are crap.
If you want to start with astronomy get a good pair of binocs instead. They will allow you to see lots of interesting stuff. If you get more interested you can go to the nearest astronomy club and they will give you the best advice on what equipment to get.

notnormal wrote:They're designed for different purposes. UPS are intended for automatically shutting down the computer, and thus have a short run time. The power systems are intended for running electronics for long periods of times. Essentially, it's just 2 sealed non-spillable 20 amp-hour AGM battery (total 40 amp-hour) with an inverter attached. Much more pleasant then buying a deep cycle battery and hooking up an inverter, especially if you have kids.
Lots of the smaller UPS only have a 7 amp-hour battery. This thing has a 40 amp-hour battery.
A 600 VA UPS has four advantages over the NOMA Back-up Power System 400W.
1) Can automatically shutdown your computer.
2) More AC outlets compared to the four provided by the Power System.
3) It's smaller.
4) Software to monitor the UPS.Other than that, the Power System is a huge bargain at $99.99 and has a much greater capacity than a UPS in that price range. Personally I would get this over a UPS and not worry about blackouts.
The NOMA Back-up Power System 400W is actually made by Xantrex. It's probably a rebranded version of their system.

thoes features would be good to have, but usuaully come with more expensive brands. Check out Costco Kirkland luggages, suppose to be very high quality at a reasonable price.

That's an okay deal. If you do not need a UPS like device, then the Motomaster Eliminator 1200A PowerBox is a much better deal. Both feature a sealed 60 amp-hour AGM battery. However, the 1200A PowerBox will frequently go on sale for $199.99 and is much more portable. The difference is that NOMA Back-up Power System, 1,800W features a larger inverter and it monitors the lines for blackouts. However, the runtimes are roughly the same.
The NOMA 400W is a hot deal (40 amp-hour battery). The NOMA 1800W is warm deal (60 amp-hour battery). For low wattage devices, the NOMA 1800W would have a 50% greater runtime then the NOMA 400W. But the NOMA 1800W cost 3x as much as the NOMA 400W.

Sweet ... a person who knows what they are talking about (no offense to anyone else of course ....) so i've gotta ask a question:
I've been looking at the powerboxes for quasi-civilized camping where power in on during the day on generator but off during the night. Or no power for a couple of days ...
However, the amp-hour capacities are kinda low at 60Ah for the powerbox 1200 and Xantrex 1500. I did some research and it's 3x20Ah AGM batteries and they are relatively expensive to replace at ~ 55 bucks each at Polar Batteries here in BC.
I really like the form factor ... but I want more capacity. I'm eyeing those nice deep cycle marine batteries with 100+ Amp-hour capacities ... but i'd have to buy a decent inverter PLUS a decent charging system and that's not cool with kids at a campsite. I'd be worried about a vented marine battery with gases and all that stuff ... plus dealing with a hydrometer and whatnot.
My question is:
Do you know of any way to increase a powerbox's capacity - like parallel a deep cycle battery or even an Optima-type spiral cel sealed/non-spillable battery to a powerbox? Or any other ideas/products to get more capacity but keeping it "safe"?
I think I read somewhere on the Xantrex site that you could parallel batteries to the powerbox but you'd have to charge them separately if the batt supplies are different make and capacities. But that still doesn't really solve my problems unless I splurge on an Optima-type 50 Ah battery which runs 178 bucks at Costco.
Thanks for your time.
*edit* can you tell me if this battery is totally sealed, maintenance free?
http://www.canadiantirepower.ca/en/prod ... =Batteries
100Ah at a 100 hour rate is pretty high - double the competition ... and at a pretty penny of 250 inflated dollars ... but not entirely sure if it's truly non-spillable or just overpriced. Of course, I could spend 180 bucks x2 to be sure with dual-Optimas but that getting out there plus a pain in the back literally lugging around 2x45lb batteries.
He .... looka lika MAN!
I tell you every ting!
